There’s no authority unless you hold the party line

A small incident today got me thinking about how we go about maintaining discipline in school. The background to this little story is this. Two weeks before half term, our head launched a new drive to reduce the number of toilet breaks taken by pupils during lessons. The new edict was that, unless there was a known medical condition or an emergency, under no circumstances should pupils be allowed out of the classroom to go to the toilet or get a drink of water. The message was clearly broadcast to all pupils during tutor time throughout the week.
