OFSTED. Watch dog, attack dog or mad dog?

It is the one word that can fill those working in education with fear. They can destroy careers and close schools overnight. But are they really serving our education system, parents and children?

School inspectors have been around since 1883, but OFSTED as we know it today was created by John Major’s government in 1992. Their original mandate was to inspect and create a report on every state-funded school in the country. In 2001 they took on the inspection of day care and childminding and then in 2007 they extended their role further by adding adult learning and social care service for children and maintained boarding schools. But they do not inspect colleges or universities which are still looked after by the Quality Assurance Agency.

Most people think that all OFSTED inspectors are made up of ex teachers or head teachers. The reality is that they actually use third party companies…
