Numeracy, Quadratics and Trying to teach them (NQT)

Yesterday: The first day of the rest of my life.

First day as an NQT! First day on the pay roll!  First day of having a real job!

A staff training day / CPD day / inset day / non-pupil day / Baker day (not quite sure on current lingo) greeted me as my first experience as an NQT. Arriving on the train, I joined other teachers and felt somewhat at home on the familiar walk up the hill to where I had spent my first PGCE placement. Some people looking suspiciously like they could be teachers were also making the trudge up the hill, yet in a way that appeared less confident than how I felt (they turned out to be Teach First….). The seasoned teachers were much more comfortable with the journey.

Breakfast in the canteen made plenty of time for greetings and ‘How are you’s?’ before we were whisked off to the main hall for the day to begin. Welcome: excellent…
