More thoughts on the new GCSE Maths

I’ve had a bit longer to digest the (draft) GCSE specifications from OCR and AQA (which seem almost identical) and had a chat with my head of department, the changes at foundation are a complete game changer.

The approach to teaching current A/A* candidate will be relatively unchanged; there are some additions (expanding 3+ brackets, set and sub-script notations, iterative methods, proving circle theorems and gradients) but the changes are not massive and although they will add a more challenge the overall approach won’t change when teaching the top couple of sets.

Foundation is unrecognisable compared to the current specifications. The amount of content that has been added is huge and will really challenge all students who would currently be C and below. I’ve covered the additions to foundation previously so won’t repeat myself, but the recommendation that schools add another lesson of maths a week seems like it will help but may not be…
