Wednesday Period 1, well…strictly period 0 is our literacy session. Everyone in every year reads, in silence. Preferably fiction but the sixth form often hide a text book inside the novel. From Wednesday registration (8.50 a.m.) through to proper period 1 (9.15 a.m.) the whole school, staff too, read. We keep it as a priority and try very hard not to cancel the session, for all those other pressing matters which crop up: letters to give out, jabs to have, last minute house assemblies. It’s an important message to the school community, a kind of “we believe in reading” – it underlines an obviously important task, which is critical to learning, is actually a big issue.
