On being a governor

My latest challenge is to make sense of another form of governance which is governance in a multi academy trust (MAT).  My foray into local governorship in two schools in a MAT is making me think about how the MAT itself is governed, and how it in turn delegates to and holds to account its local governing bodies (LGBs).  My first impressions are that it feels different.  This may be because I am so familiar with the LA model that getting my head round a different scheme of delegation is a challenge.  Equally it may be that growing MATs, especially where some of the schools are not performing well, have yet to bottom how to make governance work.  Particularly when there has been the turbulence that is academisation, coupled with local communities which don’t have a ready supply of skilled and committed folk who can give time to become local…
