My first experience of language immersion came at the age of thirteen, on my first trip to France via the Paris Easter School, run by Francis Holmes and his French counterpart and friend, Daniel Ane. Joining a train at Dieppe, I bought a bottle of Perrier. thinking of Babycham – “the sparkling champagne perry” – and reality came as a shock. At least I knew what the stuff was after that.
